A beautiful, and versatile breed once used to pull carts for those who couldn't afford a horse

This breed takes it name from the Swiss canton of Berne, where it traditionally worked as an all-purpose farm dog. It was used to pull carts to transport goods for those who could not afford to buy horses. The breed was declining in the 19th century but a Swiss professor named Albert Heim began working to preserve the breed and a new club was formed in 1907. This popular breed the Bernese Mountain Dog is attractive both in looks and nature has become a popular family dog. They are slow to mature these dogs keep their puppy nature for a long time. Although they are large and very strong, the dogs do well with families and children. They enjoy the company of their humans and need to spend a lot of time around people.
